I'm having a little dabble into self-publishing again, with a historical paranormal novel: A Borrowed Life. A bit different from my usual fare, but sometimes a story just insists it wants to exist, even if it's the weirdo in the room.

As London prepares to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, a privileged young man’s world is shattered when he learns about the suffering of people whose health is sacrificed for those who can pay.

James Cavendish is never ill. His family can afford the services of the healers. Men and women with a magical talent to take away sickness and injury from one person and pass it to someone else. Learning the truth about the suffering of those used as ‘receivers’ by the powerful Healers Guild destroys James’ comfortable illusions about his world.

Fired up to fight the injustices, he joins idealistic doctor, Gwilym Vaughan, and mysterious former Guild member, Sarah Prince, in their campaign to bring down the Guild and its leader, Dr Fitzwilliam. But their investigation uncovers terrible family secrets, forcing James into choices that will shatter his world and endanger his life. A life he now knows hasn’t been his own for a long time.

Mid Year Reading Review

It's been a good reading year so far. I've finished 40 books, which according to The Storygraph is 9,606 pages read and 203 hours listened. Hours listened might be slightly off, as I have done a couple on 1.1 or 1.2 speed. (Oh god, I'm turning into one of those people. I'll keep nudging it up and then be on 2x speed before you know it!) I've now completed my read of the Iain M. Banks' Culture series, which I began last year. Loved pretty much every one of those. One was a bit of a slog in the middle, but it picked up by the end. I've also started and finished a read of the Hyperion Cantos series by Dan Simmons. I have in fact been totally derailed this year by the Hyperion Cantos (a series of four books, structured as 2 duologies.)
